Introduction of patent and origin in India: The patent system can be broadly divided into two phases: the colonial era and the post-independence period. Colonial Era (Pre-Independence) The origins of the Indian patent system can be traced back to the British colonial rule. The first patent legislation in India was Act VI of 1856 , which was based on the British Patent Law of 1852. This Act aimed to encourage inventions and their disclosure by granting certain exclusive privileges to inventors for a period of 14 years.
